NO LONGER IN A CAGE: WHAT MAYA ANGELOU TAUGHT ME ABOUT MARRIAGE

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the title of a highly acclaimed award winning novel by Maya Angelou. I read this book many, many years ago; however, I’ve recently been thinking about the “caged” bird & how the metaphors fit marriage.  The plot of Angelo’s book explored how different adversities can make you feel caged. It’s not until you face those adversities head on will you ever be able to feel free and this is so true when it comes to marriage.
Being married is not a walk in the park every day.  You must develop a relationship with your spouse, similar to the relationship Maya had with her brother, a supportive relationship. Being partners in life, you do not have the time or the energy to expend on the panoply of outside forces that will try to put you in a cage and stifle your marriage. No marriage is perfect, there will be mistakes made, feelings hurt, and misunderstandings; however, you must learn from them and allow those instances to make you stronger and wiser in your marriage. Yes money may be tight, the kids are being “kids”, and/or you may be struggling with outside influences, but whatever struggles you may encounter, make it your resolve to overcome to enjoy the great rewards of a strong healthy marriage with your spouse.

5 Ways To Break Free Of The Cage:
  1. Maintain an open and honest dialogue with your spouse
  2. Learn to say NO! Do not take on more than you are capable or willing to do
  3. Set boundaries for your marriage
  4. Set boundaries for friends and family
  5. Set and keep date night with your spouse.
Just as Maya Angelou was able to stay strong, you must do the same. Don’t allow trials and tribulations to put your marriage in a cage.

Remember:  Determination, Support, and Hope are what make the CAGED BIRD SINGS!

What are some insecurities or outside influences do you need to suppress in order to break your marriage free from the CAGE?
