Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, of Chechnya, was identified as suspect #1, the man seen wearing the black hat in FBI photos. According to Slate.com, photographer Johannes Hirn created this photo essay of Tsarnaev, who was a trained boxer and competed in the National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City, UT. In the photo essay titled “Will Box for Passport,” Hirn noted that Tsarnaev would consider becoming a naturalized American if he won enough boxing competitions. In one of the photos in the album, Tsarnaev shared a tender moment with his girlfriend, who is described as half Portuguese, half Italian and converted to Islam.
Tamerlan reportedly said: “I don’t have a single American friend, I don’t understand them.”
